What does it mean when the Vocabulary level of a text is returned as Native when using the CEFR & Cambridge Scale Analysis? And, why does this happen? Is there any way to get a Vocabulary level for these? NOTE: The texts this has occurred with are in English.
Hi Sara,
Native means the vocabulary level is above C2 which is off the chart.

I’ve been having issues obtaining reports after running the CEFR & Cambridge Scale Analysis. When I first started using the analyzer, there was a toolbar across the top of the black text box, which included the option to download the color-coded file after running analyzer. And everything was running smoothly. However, when I run analysis lately, it frequently moves into the queue section, and/or doesn’t provide the cloud shortcut icon. I then have to go to my History to try to copy the full colored text, but often have to refresh or close browser (Chrome) in order to access the rainbow icon/full text. This method is MUCH more time-consuming and bothersome. Is there anyway to ensure that the color-coded cloud icon will ALWAYS appear after running CEFR analysis??? I’ve included a screenshot highlighting the icon I am often missing. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the valuable feedback! We’ve added two shortcut buttons just under the Vocabulary Tab to simplify the copy-pasting of color-coded text, addressing the issue you mentioned. Please refer to the attached screenshot for their location.
Thank you for offering a solution. Unfortunately, it seems I am still having issues obtaining the color-coded text with titles that move into “Tasks in Queue.” The newer color-coded buttons do not function when viewing results from the Queue. I can select them so the box turns blue, but nothing actually appears (See screenshot). I tried to access the full text in the “History” tab, but the title is not selectable to view options to copy or download color coded text. I also starred the title to add to “My Collection” to try to generate the full text, and still no success. I ran a particular title 2 separate times, to ensure it wasn’t due to my error, but no luck. I do not want to keep wasting my catnip credits by just re-running the Text Analyser in hopes color-coded text will appear, so I am looking for another solution. In a similar fashion as my previous inquiry, the Analyser worked well for most of the day, but then the issue came along later in the afternoon, which could just be coincidental. I cleared my cookies and cache in Chrome, as well as refreshed browser page multiple times to try to resolve, again with no luck. Thank you.

The addition of the decimal to your CEFR levels is interesting. How did you determine these additional layers of your scale? Are there any peer-reviewed research papers you can cite, or do you just determine these scales internally?
Hey Henry,
The addition of decimal digits to CEFR levels is based on a proprietary model trained with data labelled by professional language educators, including resources like the CEFR-based Sentence Profile corpus (Arase et al., 2022). Though original data lacked decimal precision, our model employs advanced machine learning to interpolate using linguistic features extracted from texts, resulting in enhanced difficulty measurement with greater detail and accuracy.

What does the infinity symbol mean in the vocabulary analysis?
The CEFR levels in the result will have one decimal place indicating the learning stage within the level scale. For example, A2.7 means the level is A2 and is at the higher end of A2; C1.1 means the level is C1 and is at the lower end of C1.

Does cathoven’s text analyser give the same general result as other cefr text analyser?
I would like to know if the text analyser in cathoven has the same general result as the roadtogrammar cefr text analyser. I really want to know since, if they are the same I would option to use your text analyser in our thesis.
Cathoven’s CEFR analyser is fully compatible with the CEFR standard, built upon internal and public scientific research.
Compared to roadtogrammar, or any other analyser, Cathoven is much more comprehensive. Therefore, results may not be exactly the same.
As you are aware, analysers like roadtogrammar base the final CEFR level solely on a limited vocabulary list.
I believe as a researcher you would agree that what makes a text difficult is not only the individual vocabulary but also grammar points, sentence structures, phrases, and so on. Cathoven takes all of these factors into account. In terms of vocabulary, we have the most comprehensive database globally, and additionally, we can estimate the CEFR levels of words that don’t have any level assigned in dictionaries.
This is why researchers in top universities and large education companies prefer us. You can check some of the papers that used Cathoven here: Papers Quoted Cathoven

Can I check if a student used your website? If so: how?
Hi Ingrid, currently, you cannot view other users’ activities on Cathoven unless you have an enterprise account and those users are linked to it.
We are developing the student side of the platform, and once it’s released, you will have the capability to monitor their work as a teacher.
For now, there is a workaround: you can ask your students to log into Cathoven, and if history saving is enabled, you can review their activity history to see when and how they used the platform.
Could you share how your students utilize Cathoven and for what purposes? We might build the features to fit you use case better.

why can’t I paste anything on your website , my device is a MacBook
Thank you for providing feedback. The issue occurred because the system considered “am” and “pm” as difficult words, with “pm” being interpreted as “private message”. The correct usage should indicate the time as “a.m.” and “p.m.” However there will be an update today, which should resolve this matter.
Alternatively, you can manually adjust the difficulty level of these words, as demonstrated in the screenshot below.
I have changed am and pm to A1, and now only the three words english, educate and phisical are A2. The verb form and sentence are very simple. The total level should be around A1.4, but why is it actually A1.9.
(I can’t give you a screenshot of the verb form and sentence because I can only insert one graph.)
Hi there, the decimal place of our general score is not a simple summation but an interpolation based on the overall distribution, so the number of higher level elements will affect its calculation. That said, A1.9 is still A1. The decimal place should always be rounded down in our system.
I have premier subscription but I can’t analyze text, view history or generate questions. It keeps saying “Unknown error”. Why does this happen and how to fix this? Thank you.
This morning there was a minor technical issue with the system. Our tech team has already resolved it. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I seem to be encountering a problem which is already mentioned in this forum — failing to paste a text for analysis or for changing the level of the text language. The solutions seem to vary. What could I do to start using your tool smoothly? Thank you in advance.
This problem generally happens with Mac users. If so, please try the following steps:
Open Cathoven Language Hub
Copy the text

I have premier subscription but I can’t download the wordlist ‘with definitions’. I have re-enter the same text into the text analyser and run the analysis for several times, but it won’t work and the Catnips seemed to be deducted for each time I run the analysis.
Hi Gabby,
We are terribly sorry for what you have experienced. We tested and confirmed the bug. It is going to be fixed within 24 hours.
In the mean time, you can analyse your text, and leave them in history. Once the bug is fixed just go to history and download the vocabulary. No need to analyse again.
Regarding the catnips, we just topped up your account.
We will let you know once the bug is fixed. Thanks for reporting.
Dear T.B,

Hi there. I’m using a Mac and when I try to download my CEFR analysed text (using the download coloured text option above the box on the analysis page) it comes up as a blank doc.x file. I also can’t copy+paste the analysed text with the highlighted colours/words. Does the download function work on Macs? What about copying+pasting the coloured texts on Macs? Tried in various browsers as well….
Hello Cat,
Thanks for your questions.
The download feature works on Macs. However, if you try to copy the colored words and paste them, they will lose their color. This is why downloading the feature is necessary. Can you please inform me about the browser you are currently using? We have tested the feature on Mac and it is functioning properly.
Could you please send your new email address to contact[at]cathoven.com, so that we can help you to change it? The users will be able to change the email by themselves soon.

Hi, I tried to analyze an article in Chinese and it doesn’t work.
Even though I’ve set HSK in Analyzer and Chinese in Text Language, pasting the text didn’t work. I managed to paste into the Title field but it showed only squares. And I do have Chinese fonts on my computer and it works in other place.
Hello Antonina, it seems that the problem you’re facing is related to your browser or operating system. To resolve this issue, kindly send an email to contact[at]cathoven.com with your system and browser details. Our team will assist you promptly.
We have also created a video using HSK Analyzer, which you can access via the link below. To paste the content, we used the right-click option in the video but the shortcut keys ctrl+v or cmd+v will also do.
Would it be possible to keep complete report of analyzed texts (I’m interested in the CEFR analysis) in users’ history? I mean not only the vocabulary CEFR downloadable text reports but also grammar and sentence analysis reports.
It happens to me quite often that I have to recheck or I just want to return to previously analysed texts and I have to make the analysis again to see the complete information.

Hello, I love your site. However I don’t understand the squiggles. Could you please tell me what they mean? Some words are white and red and marked with +∞ instead of the CEFR level.
*-∞ White means the CEFR level of the words is below A1. These words usually don’t affect readers’ comprehension no matter their English level *+∞ Red means the CEFR level of the words is above C2 or these words are not recognized by our models
In my case the need of checking the CEFR of a single word (or like pasting a few for comparison) is much more common than analyzing an entire article yet it will tell me it s too short to analyze. Just a little feedback though and thanks for your work.
The text analyzer is not supposed to be used on the vocabulary list because the level of a word is determined by both its form and its part of speech. It can’t possibly guess the part of speech of a word without context. When the context is not provided, the model is forced to assign a part of speech somewhat randomly which can affect the CEFR level of a word.
For our site, as long as the text has more than 30 words and more than 2 different sentences, we can analyze it.
However, we do plan to release a CEFR checker for vocabulary lists in the future. Let’s look forward to it!
Soon we are going to open premium accounts to offer more services.
The free account will always be enough for a regular teacher with casual usage.

Hello Cat,
Thanks for your questions.
The download feature works on Macs. However, if you try to copy the colored words and paste them, they will lose their color. This is why downloading the feature is necessary. Can you please inform me about the browser you are currently using? We have tested the feature on Mac and it is functioning properly.

Dear Tyler, thank you for sharing your positive feedback about our analyzers 🤗 We take pride in providing the most accurate analyzers on the market. Regarding the student discount, unfortunately, it is only applicable to current students.

Hi Tracy,
History page already contains all the information from the analysis page, including vocabulary, grammar, and sentence analysis reports. I have created a short video tutorial to show you how to access the CEFR analysis details on the history page:

Can your tool generate exercises?
Dear sam,
May I know what type of exercises you’re looking for?
We have a wonderful tool called “Question Generator” that can help you create wh-questions and answers.
I mean vocabulary and grammar exercises based on the text.
Great minds! We don’t have that for now but these specific features are on our roadmap.

Dear Alo,
To help you better, could you please let us know what operating system and browser you are using?
Generally speaking, Safari browser on Mac might have issues when wrong combination of short keys are used.
This web is for precisely testing your English level by writing. Recommend for people to sharpen writing skills.
This is awsomeeee!!
Do you plan to offer support for other languages for the CEFR Checker? (Especially French?)
Hi , We will offer support for Spanish for the CEFR checker soon. The French support is also on the agenda. Stay tuned by following us on Facebook or LinkedIn!
Hi,
Love your work! I was wondering if you have any publications regarding the development of the project and maybe something about the accuracy/reliability of the results.
Thank you,
Dear Hana,
Thank you so much for your kind words, we truly appreciate them!
We take great pride in the development of our tools and have a team of experts who carefully research and create them. At the moment, we only have internal publications.
I assume you’re referring to CEFR Checker or Catile. Both have been used by tens of language learning apps to create adaptive teaching content.
We understand the importance of accuracy when it comes to language learning tools, and we want to assure you that ours are top-notch. In fact, you can test our accuracy for yourself by analyzing famous and publicly available graded texts. We are confident that you will find our tools to be even more precise than others, as they are the only ones that can extract sentence structure, tenses, clauses, and more.
Hi. I’m moved by the result of your service. Thanks a lot.
I have a question. Do you plan to offer apis for developers? I’m willing to pay some.
I’m a developer at a English learning service. And we need to assess CEFR level of our contents for adaptive learning
If you have a plan, send me an email for discussion please
Hi Hyo-Seok, your nice comments motivate us to move forward.
Yes, we offer all our tools as APIs. One of our reps will reach out to you soon 🔮
These were simple questions. Would recommend it if you wanna revise or learn the topic better. Good job on making this website.
Hello, Im doing my research and I want to show this online software is legit and reliable. How do I show it?
Hi,
Thanks for using Cathoven. May I know which tool are you using? If you are using CEFR, please go to the website https://www.cathoven.com/en/cefr-checker/ and check the section “How does CEFR Checker work”. Hope it helps.
Question Generator is awesome but gets stuck when checking a few questions
Hi,
Could you help with clarifying the meaning of “get stuck when checking a few questions?”.Do you mean if when you click “A few , many, tonnes”, only the “a few “option got stuck and they other two are fine?
hi team!!
can i use the CEFR results created CATHOVEN for my own business products without persmission?
Hi ,
You can use the results by showing a clear reference to Cathoven.
Hello.I tried your text analyser.I tried to write something but it wasn’t working. Can I only copy and paste?I don’t want to copy and paste I want to write there without copy and paste. Then ı gave up and tried to copy and paste. But also copy and paste wasn’t working.I tried other things like question generator, text simplifier…They also weren’t working.I am using Ipad.I am just thinking if you can’t use with Ipad or it is only happening to me?I hope you have a good day by the way.
Hi,
The function of writing in Ado hub on the Ipad is not online yet. You can only use the typing function on the PC now.
Hello, I love your site. However I don’t understand the squiggles. Could you please tell me what they mean? Some words are white and red and marked with +∞ instead of the CEFR level.
Hi Sal,
So glad that you love our site!
*-∞ White means the CEFR level of the words is below A1. These words usually don’t affect readers’ comprehension no matter their English level
*+∞ Red means the CEFR level of the words is above C2 or these words are not recognized by our models
Great – thanks for the explanation.
Indigenous knowledge system
In my case the need of checking the CEFR of a single word (or like pasting a few for comparison) is much more common than analyzing an entire article yet it will tell me it s too short to analyze. Just a little feedback though and thanks for your work.
Hi Nuk,
Thanks for your great feedback!

Thanks for use it free, it helps a lot!
We are happy to know that it’s helpful.
Soon we are going to open premium accounts to offer more services.
The free account will always be enough for a regular teacher with casual usage.
I’ve been doing some independent research on text difficulty analysis using machine learning, and I found your tool Catile tool quite interesting. I was curious if you have released any more detailed information about how it works. Are you using an MLP?
Dear Shaun, happy to see another linguist. Here we pretty much explained all the aspects we take into consideration while measuring the Catile score.
In this comment, we wrote a bit more about how we make use of NLP.
If you have more specific questions you can reach out to us at contact[at]cathoven.com
when exporting file it downloads file with .file (text.file) extension
how do I open it?
We got reports about this happening with Safari on Mac computers. You can open the file directly with a text editor, or change the extension to .txt
If it doesn’t work please reach out.
